About this trail

The History Walk Trail
This trail was researched and written by a group of Portslade volunteers, none of whom had any previous experience in history projects.

Over the course of five months during 2017 the group met-up regularly to compare notes, discuss their findings and form these into the website you see today.

Therefore, special thanks goes to:

The Portslade Timeline
A new group of local volunteers undertook a comprehensive four month course in history research. During 2019 they each researched a separate century, discovering how these events would have impacted on life in Portslade.

Many thanks to the inspirational work of local historian, Judy Middleton. Her core-research provided an excellent springboard for our novice historians. Judy's in-depth research can be found on:

Kevin Bacon, Brighton and Hove Museums
. Gave great advice throughout the project on the  content and design of the website, including writing style. He also helped the children with their trail, giving a superb presentation at St Nicolas School.

Gary Osbourne, Portslade resident. Gary kindly supplied many of the old photos of Portslade, from his vast collection of old postcards

Tom Parsons, former PACA student, now studying Ancient History at university. Tom gave a great talk on ancient history research, including the problems of reliable information

Trevor Povey, historian. Trevor gave guided walks to the both the school groups and the adult volunteers. He also gave sessions on researching history and what facts to look for. He also helped with the fact-checking on the volunteer pieces, and has generally been an inspiration for all local people interested in their local history.

Alan Robins, local Councillor. Alan gave a talk on local history, but also on his role in leading tourism for the city Council. Alan has been very supportive of this project, along with the general work of Fresh Start Portslade.

Julie Ryan, author.  Julie gave a fascinating talk on her book about the Spanish Civil War and social conditions in 20th century London. She highlighted how she researched the book, which included double-checking of sources.

Dexter Shepherd, video production. Dexter, an A-level student at BHASVIC, put together all the videos and soundtracks for this website, including the prototype website design.

Also thanks to Cooper Hall, Trevor Povey, Clare Shepherd and Julie Ryan for their editing, proof-reading and testing skills on the website
